The Shipibo are an indigenous people, who reside along the Ucayali river in the Amazonian rainforest of Peru.
They are masters of Ayahuasca, and through the powerful spirit of the vine they can travel to other realms and see visions of plants and spirits.
They also visually see the songs of Ayahuasca, the icaros.
The intricate patterns and geometric designs on Shipibo textiles are inspired by these visions.
The Shipibo are known for labyrinthine geometric designs that reflect their culture and their cosmology.
The main elements of the designs are the square, the rhombus, the octagon and the cross, which “represents the southern Cross constellation which dominates the night sky and divides the cosmos into four quadrants.
